MONTERREY, Mexico — Talent can produce great plays. Consistency, however, is what begins to define a player’s career.
Fernando Mayén is demonstrating both.
The Mexican running back has begun a new chapter in his ONEFA Liga Mayor career after joining Borregos Monterrey for the 2026 season, following an outstanding tenure with Borregos Puebla.
Changing teams represented a new challenge: a different system, new teammates, new responsibilities and, above all, greater expectations.
So far, Mayén has responded on the field.
In his first two games with Monterrey, he recorded six rushing touchdowns: two in his debut against Borregos Ciudad de México and four more in an outstanding performance against his former team, Borregos Puebla.
But reducing Fernando Mayén’s story to those six touchdowns would capture only a small part of what he has accomplished.
His career reflects a player who has maintained an impressive level of production while the demands and expectations surrounding him continue to increase.
A Career Built on Results
Mayén arrived in Monterrey with an impressive résumé.
During the 2025 season with Borregos Puebla, he recorded 1,025 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, numbers that placed him among the standout offensive players in Liga Mayor.
His career had already received significant recognition. In 2023, he was named ONEFA MVP during his time with Puebla.
Those accomplishments created considerable expectations when he arrived in Monterrey for the 2026 season.
And his start with his new team has demonstrated that he is prepared to embrace the challenge.
In his official debut with Monterrey against Borregos Ciudad de México, Mayén scored two rushing touchdowns in a 49–42 victory.
It was only the beginning.
His next performance would carry special significance.
The Return to Puebla
Returning to the field where he had built much of his college football career meant facing the team he once represented.
Fernando Mayén returned to Puebla wearing different colours.
And he responded in the best way an athlete can: on the field.
Mayén scored four touchdowns against Borregos Puebla and added a two-point conversion, directly contributing 26 points in Monterrey’s 44–38 victory.
His fourth touchdown was particularly important.
Puebla had taken a 38–30 lead during the fourth quarter, and Monterrey needed to respond.
It did.
Mayén once again found the end zone, and Monterrey completed a comeback in one of the most exciting games of the opening weeks of the season.
For any running back, scoring four touchdowns in a single game represents an outstanding performance.
Doing it against his former team added a special chapter to Mayén’s career.
Six Touchdowns in His First Two Games
The numbers illustrate his immediate impact with Monterrey:
Two games. Six rushing touchdowns. Two victories.
There is still a long way to go this season, and it would be premature to draw conclusions about what will happen by the end of the schedule.
However, one thing can already be observed.
Fernando Mayén changed teams, but his ability to produce offensively remains intact.
That is particularly significant because it demonstrates that his previous success was not necessarily dependent on a single system.
He arrived at a new institution, began working with new teammates and continued finding the end zone.
A Running Back’s Success Is Also Built Through Teamwork
There is another important aspect of Fernando Mayén’s career.
Although individual statistics naturally place the spotlight on the player carrying the football, Mayén himself has publicly acknowledged the importance of those working around him.
A running back does not reach the end zone alone.
Before the yards, touchdowns and statistics appear, there is a collective effort.
The offensive line must create running lanes.
The quarterback must execute correctly.
Receivers also have blocking responsibilities.
Coaches design the plays.
And finally, the running back must identify the openings, make decisions within seconds and capitalize on those opportunities.
Mayén has acknowledged precisely the importance of that collective effort.
That mentality could be fundamental on a team such as Monterrey, where the ultimate objective is much greater than any individual statistic.
Mayén and Sarabia: An Intriguing Offensive Combination
The presence of Fernando Mayén alongside quarterback Fernando Sarabia gives Borregos Monterrey two important offensive weapons.
Both entered the season with productive records.
Mayén was coming off a season in which he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, while Sarabia had produced more than 2,000 total yards the previous year.
The combination can present difficult decisions for opposing defenses.
Focusing too heavily on stopping the running game can create opportunities through the air.
Concentrating too much on the quarterback and receivers can create openings that a running back with Mayén’s abilities can exploit.
Opposing teams will undoubtedly make adjustments as the season progresses and more game film becomes available to study Monterrey’s offensive system.
That will be one of Mayén’s next major challenges.
The Next Challenge Is Maintaining Consistency
One great game generates headlines.
A great season builds a career.
Fernando Mayén has already demonstrated that he can deliver outstanding performances.
Now the challenge will be maintaining that level throughout the remainder of the schedule.
Defenses know what he is capable of and will likely begin preparing schemes specifically designed to limit his impact.
In addition, a full football season demands physical endurance, discipline and the ability to adapt constantly.
For that reason, the true value of his performance should not be measured solely by one four-touchdown game.
His development throughout the entire season will be what ultimately matters.
Monterrey Is Pursuing Something Bigger
Borregos Monterrey entered the 2026 season with an important objective after losing the 2025 championship game to Auténticos Tigres.
The program wants to return to championship contention.
Fernando Mayén can become an important piece of that effort.
But championships are not won in September.
Nor do they depend on a single player.
The team’s collective performance throughout the season will determine how far Monterrey can go.
For Mayén, that means continuing to contribute within an offense that will need to evolve as the level of competition increases.
A Career That Is Still Being Written
Fernando Mayén’s football story is particularly interesting because it does not depend on a single spectacular afternoon.
There is already a body of work behind him.
There was recognition in Puebla.
There was a season with more than 1,000 rushing yards.
There were 12 touchdowns in 2025.
Then came the decision to begin a new chapter with Monterrey.
And now there are six rushing touchdowns in his first two games of 2026.
There is still plenty of football left to play.
We do not yet know what his final statistics will look like or how far Borregos Monterrey will go this season.
But there is one conclusion that can be drawn from what has happened on the field:
Fernando Mayén has changed teams without losing the offensive ability that made him one of ONEFA’s standout running backs.
Now, perhaps the most interesting part of his story begins.
The challenge is to demonstrate that he can maintain that level, continue developing as a player and become an important part of Borregos Monterrey’s championship ambitions.
The 2026 season is only beginning to write its first chapters.
And Fernando Mayén is already leaving his name on several of them.
