TORONTO — October 20, 2026
The Toronto Maple Leafs returned to the win column Monday night with a 3–1 victory over the San Jose Sharks at Scotiabank Arena, ending a three-game losing streak and delivering a much-needed response in front of their home crowd. NHL
Toronto did not dominate from the opening faceoff, but the team showed patience and improved as the game progressed.
San Jose opened the scoring in the first period when Mason Marchment gave the Sharks a 1–0 advantage. The Maple Leafs responded late in the second period, when Auston Matthews scored on the power play with just 11 seconds remaining, tying the game and shifting momentum before the intermission. NHL
The decisive moment came early in the third period.
Gavin McKenna scored the go-ahead goal at 4:56, converting on the power play to give Toronto a 2–1 lead. The goal was McKenna’s third of the season and became the game winner. NHL
For the 18-year-old rookie, the moment carried additional significance.
McKenna now has six points through his first 10 NHL games, placing him among a very small group of young Maple Leafs players to produce at that level so early in their careers. His performance also came in a game that drew attention because of his matchup with San Jose’s Ivar Stenberg, the second overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. NHL

Toronto then closed the game with discipline.
Nick Paul scored into an empty net with 40 seconds remaining, sealing the 3–1 result. NHL
Matthews finished with one goal and two assists, giving him 16 points through 10 games this season. The performance reinforced his importance to Toronto not only as a scorer, but as the player around whom much of the team’s offensive structure continues to revolve. NHL
Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves and earned his first home victory as a Maple Leaf, giving Toronto the stability it needed while the game remained close. NHL
The special teams were also a major factor.
Toronto went 2-for-5 on the power play and successfully killed all four San Jose power-play opportunities. That balance proved decisive in a game where the margin remained narrow until the final minute. NHL
For the Maple Leafs, the victory does not erase the concerns created by the previous three games, but it does offer something important: a reset.
Early-season losing streaks can quickly become larger problems when confidence begins to disappear. Toronto needed a result that restored some rhythm, rewarded its younger players and gave its veteran leaders a chance to reestablish control.
Monday night provided exactly that.
The Maple Leafs improved to 4-4-2, while San Jose fell to 4-4-1. NHL
Toronto now turns its attention to the next stage of the schedule with a little more confidence — and with Gavin McKenna continuing to show why expectations surrounding him are so high.
For La Verdad Express, one of the most important developments from this game is not simply the final score.
It is the growing evidence that Toronto’s younger generation may already be capable of influencing important games.
And on Monday night, that difference helped end the slide.
