Behind every season of Mexican student football stands a community whose work rarely ends with the final whistle. Players, coaches, officials, universities, families and administrators sustain a tradition that connects athletic competition with education and institutional pride.

Since its establishment in 1978, the Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano—ONEFA—has helped give that tradition a lasting organisational framework.

TRAVIP TV SPORTS recognises this collective achievement and congratulates President José Luis Rodríguez González and his board for their documented work during the opening years of the 2025–2028 administration.

A History That Began Before ONEFA

American football in Mexico predates the organisation. ONEFA’s founding brought a new structure to an existing university sporting tradition.

A historical account published by Receptor traces its creation to meetings in Ajijic, Jalisco, followed by a congress in Monterrey in January 1978. UNAM’s institutional sports history also identifies 1978 as the year ONEFA began overseeing Liga Mayor competition. Receptor, Deporte UNAM

That beginning matters because a sporting tradition needs more than enthusiasm to survive. It needs calendars, rules, coordination and institutions willing to support successive generations.

Through changing competitive structures and leadership teams, ONEFA has remained part of that shared foundation.

Preserving Competition Across Generations

The organisation’s history also includes periods of division and renewed cooperation. In its review of 2021, Tecnológico de Monterrey highlighted the reunification of university football competition after a decade with separate ONEFA and CONADEIP leagues. Tecnológico de Monterrey

That milestone belongs to the administrations and institutions involved at the time. It also illustrates the responsibility inherited by every subsequent leadership team: maintaining a competitive space where different university communities can meet.

For supporters, the visible result is a season of games. Behind it lies the less visible work of keeping those institutions connected.

A New Presidency in February 2025

José Luis Rodríguez González was appointed president on February 21, 2025, during ONEFA’s national assembly in Huatulco, Oaxaca.

The Instituto Politécnico Nacional confirmed his appointment for the 2025–2028 term. The assembly also addressed team groupings, the competition calendar and regulatory changes. IPN

His presidency therefore began with practical organisational responsibilities alongside the broader task of representing student football.

2025: Recognition and Institutional Priorities

During his first year, Rodríguez González headed a ceremony recognising Liga Mayor players, coaches and eleven sports chroniclers. The event acknowledged both competitive achievement and the people who preserve and communicate the sport’s history. Esbozo Deportivo

He also identified financial strengthening as an administrative priority. In a July 2025 interview, he described resource limitations and the need for sustained investment. Those statements establish a direction for his administration; they should not be mistaken for evidence that every financial objective has already been achieved. El Tiempo

In December, the 49th Tazón Azteca brought together regional selections and more than 140 Liga Mayor players. Coverage records Rodríguez González presenting the trophy to North selection head coach Carlos Altamirano. Receptor

Together, these activities reflect a first year involving competition, public recognition and attention to organisational sustainability.

2026: Continuing the Work

In June 2026, Rodríguez González participated in the championship presentation for ONEFA’s Colegial tournament. UNAM reported that he delivered the trophy following the Búfalos’ undefeated championship campaign, which ended with a 31–3 victory over the IPN’s Lobos Plateados. Deporte UNAM

Later, he headed the presentation of the 2026 season, accompanied by recognition for players, coaches and media representatives associated with the previous campaign. Agencia JRF

These documented appearances demonstrate engagement with several parts of the organisation’s community, including competition beyond its most prominent Liga Mayor games.

A Public Recognition From TRAVIP TV SPORTS

TRAVIP TV SPORTS congratulates José Luis Rodríguez González for his commitment to leading ONEFA and recognises the work of his board during 2025 and 2026.

We also extend that recognition to the institutions, coaches, officials, athletes, families and journalists whose contributions make each season possible.

ONEFA’s extraordinary legacy is a collective one. Its value reaches beyond championship trophies to the opportunities it creates for students to represent their schools, accept responsibility and work toward shared goals.

As the organisation approaches five decades of history, preserving that purpose is a responsibility worthy of public appreciation.

To President Rodríguez González and the entire ONEFA community: congratulations on the work documented so far, and best wishes for the continued development of Mexican student football.

With appreciation and respect,
TRAVIP TV SPORTS
